This research aims to reconsider the narration of ruined images during the conquest of Mecca in order to reduce the false interpretations, using analytic method and representing both similarities and differences in four principal Islamic historical texts. In other words, this paper reviews the Prophet Muhammad’s approach to the images and tries to provide a more extensive perception of Islam’s viewpoint to the visual arts. To this end, the semantic distinction of the words involved in that topic, such as Surat (image), Sanam (idol), and Timthal (effigy), all referring to the images in the Kaaba, would be examined. Also, using a historical-analytic approach, the article compares and analyzes the narrations to emphasize what they have in common. In response to the main concern of this research it can be said that the Prophet was not opposed to the concepts of images and visual arts, but to the objects of worship and idolatry. Therefore, the sacred images or the images depicting holy subjects are considered exceptions.
