Ḵāqāni’s Toḥfat al- ʿErāqayn is one of the most important travel books in Persian language. This travel book is a new experience in the career of a poet who is mainly an odist. One of the important issues in Toḥfat al- ʿErāqayn is the concept of ‘place.’ The value of the places in this travel book is related to the mental and psychological states of the speaking subject. In other words, the designation and description of the places in this travel book is closely related to the mental state of the speaking subject. Ḵāqāni is a travelling poet or is always thinking about travel. From this point of view, his mind is involved in the city where he lives, before any thought of moving or traveling to the desired and ideal place or places. Šervān, the birthplace of Khaqani, is administered under the rule of the Šervānshāhs. In order to leave Šervān as a place he doesn't like to stay in, Ḵāqāni is faced with his personal and inner feelings, issues and sufferings, and on the other hand with the political obstacles. Both from a personal and a biographical point of view, as well as from a political and social point of view, Šervān is an ‘evil city.’ In the Toḥfat al- ʿErāqayn, Ḵāqāni, as the Speaking Subject, enters the arena of a kind of imaginary talk with the sun. This virtual address, along with conceptual metaphors and conceptual mediators such as travel and happiness, provides the possibility of creating a relationship between the speaking subject and the place/places as a possibility of freedom. Ḵāqāni is not looking for utopia or ideal places, but for different reasons, he does not want to live in Šervān and wishes to live in his favorite places
