In a theoretical framework which he calls the internal-external dialectic of identification, Richard Jenkins argues that the identity is the result of a mutual, dialectic action between the concept of “the self” or the (internal) self-image and the descriptions of us (the external image) given to us by others. Therefore, the identity crisis occurs when there is a clash between the internal senses of identity and external aspects of identity to the extent that the possibility of any combination, agreement, domination, or a synthesis will be very difficult. Therefore, the formation of a stable identity depends on a successful synthesis of this dialectic process. On the other hand, in Landowski’s semiotic model, four approaches are proposed regarding the interaction between the subject and the object (the self and the others or the universe), and the relationship of each approach is examined against the processes of the production of semantics. These semantic systems are as follows: programmation, manipulation, adjustment, and accident, each of which describes a different interaction of the subject (the self), and the object (the others). Based on the characteristics of each, it is possible to analyze the concept of identity in the theoretical framework of Jenkins in the processes of their semantic production. In this regard, it can be illustrated how the mutual action of the self-image of the subject (internal) and the other’s image (external) in the three approaches of “programmation”, “manipulation” and “accident”, resulting in the formation of an unstable, figurative identity and the produced semantic area, may be evaluated in the context of identity crises. But such a mutual action in the “adjustment” semantic system approach, due to the subject’s nature of interaction with another, will lead to a stable, yet dynamic identity.
